Over the past few days, I've been reading a sudden influx of articles about the end of the "populist" tea parties. These articles are reacting to the many troubles the Tea Party Convention seems to be having. Perhaps the convention organizers are beginning to find out that it's easy to be angry but it's difficult to organize that anger into a legitimate political force.
Of course, the same people who are saying that the party is over are the same people who said that the Republican Party was dead after the election of 2008. Instead, in the major political races within the last 5 months, the Republicans have made a clean sweep, including two governorships, a mayoral race in the largest city in America, & the senate seat of the man who was the Liberal Lion of the Senate for over 50 years.
There may be a little truth to this death theory, though. Within the last few days, PresidentObama has been sounding like a populist. He's been going hard after the banks & has now even ordered a bipartisan committee to attack the outrageous federal deficit. If the President's latest tone catches on, the Tea Party people may be backed into a corner.
This year, the NAACP celebrates its 100th anniversary. This great organization has, against all odds, fought many great battles to make the lives of black Americans (indeed, ALL Americans) better. It stood up to the Jim Crow system. It fought for voting rights. It fought to desegregate schools. It fought for workers rights. My, how times have changed.
The sad thing is that I’m not sure what they stand for any more. During their last convention this past summer, in speech after speech, all you heard was that the white man was working the system against us. I didn’t hear one word about taking responsibility for our own people (that came later when President Obama spoke). Not one word was said about black on black crime; only about police brutality. Nothing was said about saving money or about financial responsibility; only about how Wall Street & the banks screwed the black man.
To most of the speakers, the black man was & still is the victim of white people. I don’t believe that to be true, for the most part. Yes, racism still exists. I feel it every day. However, there comes a point where you break free of that type of thinking & deal with doing things regardless of racism. You stand strong, you take care of each other, you get your priorities together, & above all, you stop making excuses for why you're not accomplishing your dreams.
For the longest time, the NAACP was great at conveying that message. Now, not so much. For example, when Glenn Beck called President Obama a racist, what did the NAACP do? Did they march on Fox News headquarters? Did they organize a boycott? Nope. They put out a press release. When President Obama needed help pushing health care reform (an issue extremely important to the black community), what was the NAACP doing? They were busy protesting.....in support of dog killer Michael Vick.
The NAACP needs to get back to basics again & start thinking about how to help the community. It saddens me to say this but new leadership is now needed.
I often find it funny that when Republicans are offended by something that someone says, they want to boycott. When one of their own says something offensive, they say it’s freedom of speech. I’ve said it before & I’ll say it again. People can say whatever they want to. That’s the beauty of America. However, this does not mean that I have to financially support companies who advertise with people who say or do offensive things. That’s also the beauty of America.
To that end, I called for a strong response when Glenn Beck said offensive things about President Obama. I blogged a partial list, courtesy of colorofchange.org, of companies that advertised on his show. I’d love to take credit for the response but alas, I can not. Thanks to colorofchange.org & a few other organizations, it looks like we are getting the desired effect. It’s Fox’s hope that things will cool down. It is my hope that the pressure will be kept on. We need to let Fox News & advertisers know that we will not tolerate hate speech, whether it’s from a liberal or a conservative. There will no longer be any place for that in our society & if people do it & companies support it, they will pay a financial price for it. Hate speech has gotten completely out of control lately. It’s time to fight back.
In one of New York City’s free tabloids, there was a front page headline that said Sweating the Numbers: Obama’s Approval Ratings Drop To 50% Over Economy. First off, I doubt that Obama’s really worrying about the poll numbers right now. Real leaders don’t concern themselves with petty issues like that, especially when there are a lot of problems that need fixing. Second, a little historical perspective is needed here. Ronald Reagan, like Obama, inherited a recession; his from Jimmy Carter. Reagan took 3 years to pull the country out & while he was busy implementing policies, his approval ratings dropped…a lot. In fact, when he ran against Walter Mondale in 1984, he was actually behind in the polls until their second debate. As it turned out, a lot of his policies are beginning to work. All of the economic indicators seem to show that the economy is beginning to bottom out & turn upward. The stock market is up almost 2000 points from its bottom only 6 months ago (so much for antiObama CNBC & the Obama bear market). Even unemployment, usually a lagging indicator, actually dipped downward last month so that's a good sign. When people are trying to fix problems, they will not be popular because eventually, they will ruffle feathers (see health care reform for a more recent example). The real leaders won't stick their fingers up to see which wat the political wind is blowing. They will stand strong & with conviction that what they are doing is right.
Here are the advertisers on Glenn Beck's television show. Please join me & contact them. Let them know that you will no longer give your hard earned money to them so that they can support someone who practices racial politics for ratings. Freedom of speech is something that Glenn Beck is entitled to. However, we as human beings are also entitled to not give our money to companies that give financial support to such hatred.

The dangers of these tactics are real. We saw the same dynamic during the presidential race: By the end, the McCain/Palin campaign was unable to control the violent energy whipped up by their race-baiting. It resulted in an unprecedented number of threats on Obama's life, a rise in the number of hate groups, and an increase in the number of threats and crimes against immigrants and Black people. FOX has a horrible track record on pushing racist propaganda, but Glenn Beck appears to be taking the network to an even lower standard. He's trying to divide and distract America when we should be coming together and talking about issues that really matter--like health care and the economy. The good news is that we have the power to stop this. All major media is funded by advertising. And advertisers care more than anything what consumers think. Mitt Romney wrote an op ed piece in USA Today http://blogs.usatoday.com/oped/2009/07/mr-president-whats-the-rush.html?poe=HFMostPopular about the health care system & Massachusetts's solutions in dealing with it. The piece is entitled "Mr. President, What's the Rush". Romney's two points in the piece is that health care reform doesn't have to happen now & that republicans are not the enemy. Mitt Romney is wrong on at least one of those points. Time is of the essense. There's a reason why it's taken 50 years to get this far with reform. It's because the people who are against it are well funded & entrenched. Every president has started to attempt reform & have been driven back, leaving it to the next person. In the meantime, people die from a broken system that helps the very few get richer & richer. As far as the republicans go, there are some who want to see the system change, while the vast majority want to see the president fail. They want to try to score a victory against President Obama. They could care less about the American people & trying to fix the system. To them, this is a game. Well, the American people need to tell them that this is not a fucking game!!! There are people dying because they either can't afford to get the proper care or they've been turned away due to a cruel system. This has to stop. What better time than now to stop it? The time is now to fix it. There should be no more delays & stall strategies. Peoples lives depend on it.

Last Thursday, CNN President Jon Klein sent an e-mail to a handful of the network's "Lou Dobbs Tonight" staffers informing them that he considered one of the stories pursued by the infamously anti-immigrant host to be "dead." On his radio show the week before, Dobbs declared that President Obama needed to "produce a birth certificate," picking up on a thoroughly debunked conspiracy theory that claims Obama was not born in the United States, and the birth certificate released by his campaign last year was fake. Dobbs repeatedly pushed the "birther" cause despite the fact that his colleagues at CNN have repeatedly called the story "total bull." In fact, while guest-hosting Dobbs' own show on July 17, Kitty Pilgrim refuted the fringe theory, saying, "CNN has fully investigated the issue, found no basis for the questions about the president's birthplace, but the controversy lives on, especially on the Internet." But Dobbs has persisted, attacking his critics as "limp-minded, lily-livered lefties" who hate him because he has "the temerity to inquire as to where the birth certificate was." As Dobbs continued to air the conspiracy theory, Klein backed off his admonition of the host, telling the Los Angeles Times that Dobbs had handled the issue in a "legitimate" manner and "if there are future news pegs, then we have to take that story as it comes." On Sunday, Washington Post media critic Howard Kurtz used his CNN show to chastise media outlets that "give the birthers any airtime" to repeat their "ludicrous claims." Kurtz specifically criticized Dobbs for not acting "responsible."
BORN IN THE USA: Obama was born on Aug. 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. This date is on the Certification of Live Birth released by the Hawaii Department of Health last year at the request of Obama. Birthers like Dobbs point to the fact that the campaign released the "short form" certification rather than the "long form" -- which is drawn up by the hospital and contains more information -- as the crux of their argument that the President is hiding something. But as FactCheck.org noted when they investigated and debunked claims about Obama's birth certificate, "the Hawaii Department of Health's birth record request form does not give the option to request a photocopy of your long-form birth certificate," and "their short form has enough information to be acceptable to the State Department." Birthers, like conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi, claim that the certificate posted by the Obama campaign was "a false, fake birth certificate," but its authenticity has been independently confirmed by FactCheck.org, which examined it in person and declared that "it is real and three-dimensional." Additionally, on Oct. 31, 2008, Dr. Chiyome Fukino, director of the Hawaii Department of Health, issued a statement saying that he had "personally seen and verified that the Hawaii State Department of Health has Sen. Obama's original birth certificate on record in accordance with state policies and procedures." Definitive proof of Obama's Hawaii birth has also been found in the archives of two Hawaii newspapers, the Honululu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin, which both printed birth announcements days after Obama was born in 1961. Birth announcements in those papers are placed by the state Department of Health, not the family.
RIGHT-WING MEDIA GIVES VOICE: Dobbs isn't the only media personality giving voice to the birthers. As PolitiFact's Robert Farley wrote last month, "the conservative WorldNetDaily.com Web site is the conductor of the Birther train." The far-right outlet, which sells "Where's The Birth Certificate?" bumper stickers, convinced someone to ask White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs about the conspiracy in May. The birther theory has also been pushed by bigger names in the right-wing media. Before the 2008 election, radio host Rush Limbaugh speculated that Obama may have gone to Hawaii to visit his dying grandmother to take care of "this birth certificate business." Since then, Limbaugh has joked, "[W]hat do Obama and God have in common? Neither has a birth certificate." Earlier this month, Limbaugh stepped it up a notch, declaring that "Barack Obama has yet to prove he's a citizen." Fox News has also elevated the birther conspiracy, running headlines like "Should Obama Release Birth Certificate?" on its Fox Nation website and running reports on birther-based lawsuits on its news shows. Fox's Sean Hannity has aired claims that "the president is not, in fact, a legitimate citizen by birth" and asked a caller on his radio show if he had "ever seen" Obama's birth certificate.
THE BIRTHER BILL: In March, Rep. Bill Posey (R-FL) introduced legislation requiring "presidential candidates to produce copies of their birth certificates and other documentation to prove natural-born citizenship." Posey's bill has gathered nine co-sponsors in the House. Trying to explain why he introduced the bill, Posey issued a statement saying, "This bill, by simply requiring such documentation for future candidates for president, will remove this issue as a reason for questioning the legitimacy of a candidate elected as president." But Posey has undermined this seemingly innocuous rationale for his legislation by outright accusing Obama of hiding something on a right-wing Internet radio show. "The only people that I know who are afraid to take drug tests are the people who use drugs," said Posey. Claiming that he hadn't looked at the evidence, Posey previously told the Orlando Sentinel, "I can't swear on a stack of Bibles whether he is or isn't" a citizen. On MSNBC's Hardball last week, host Chris Matthews challenged one of the bill's co-sponsors, Rep. John Campbell (R-CA), telling him that "what you're doing is appeasing the nutcases...you're verifying the paranoia out there." Asked if he believed Obama was a citizen, Campbell responded, "as far as I know, yes." Matthews retorted, "as far as you know? I'm showing you his birth certificate!" Matthews is correct that many conservative lawmakers are comfortable "feeding the wacko wing." Just today, Politico reported that Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) said birthers "have a point." "I don't discourage it," said Inhofe.

I don't think I can do it justice so I'll just put up part of the article. "A typical street whore." "A bunch of ghetto thugs." "Ghetto street trash." "Wonder when she will get her first abortion." These are a small selection of some of the racially-charged comments posted to the conservative 'Free Republic' blog Thursday, aimed at U.S. President Barack Obama's 11-year-old daughter Malia after she was photographed wearing a t-shirt with a peace sign on the front. The thread was accompanied by a photo of Michelle Obama speaking to Malia that featured the caption, "To entertain her daughter, Michelle Obama loves to make monkey sounds." Though this may sound like the sort of thing one might read on an Aryan Nation or white power website, they actually appeared on what is commonly considered one of the prime online locations for U.S. Conservative grassroots political discussion and organizing - and for a short time, the comments seemed to have the okay of site administrators. Moderators of the blog left the comments - and commenters - in place until a complaint was lodged by a writer doing research on the conservative movement, almost a full day later. A note on the front of the blog reads, "Free Republic does not advocate or condone racism, violence, rebellion, secession, or an overthrow of the government," but one comment on the thread read, "This disgusting display makes me more and more eager for the revolution," while another read, "I never actually wnated [sic] to be a pistol before but..." After attention from other blogs, the thread was suppressed and placed under review, but before long it was returned to the site intact, and attracted a new series of racial slurs when the original complaint email was posted publicly to the site, with the sender's email address intact. "The writer has a point," wrote site owner Jim Thompson sarcastically. "We should steer clear of Obama's children. They can't help it if their old man is an American-hating Marxist pig." "I agree Jim," wrote commenter, by the nickname NoobRep. "The kids didn't pick their commie pinko pansy of a father. Nor did they choose to be put into the spotlight. But Obama/Soetoro is fair game and so is his witch of a wife."
"Freepers, get the word out loud and wide. The Vancouver Sun "journalist" Chris Parry that defamed Jim Robinson and FreeRepublic is none other than radical left blogger "Hollywoodoz" at the Daily Kos. In addition to writting for the Vancouver Sun, Chris is a frustrated and failed internet entrepreneur, having launched many websites and blogs, all of which have virtually no traffic, following, or success. Chris also writes movie reviews, though these are pretty lame. Chris Parry actually advocated attacking "negros" and blaming the republicans for it. The blog then goes on to list a bunch of news media contacts so that they can make their case that they're being set up. In order to believe their excuses, you would have to believe that all of those racist quotes came from one person masquerading as many people. You'd also have to believe that they're really not racist people, even though they took the offending thread down & then put it back up. Basically, they kept their offending conversation until they got busted for it. Then, they figured they'd put it back up once the smoke cleared except that they got busted again. It's unfortunate that some conservatives have gotten to the point where they can feel free to spew their racist vile. It's a trend I've been noticing for a couple of years now. Racism's bad enough. However, when you bring a person's young kids into the mix, you've completely crossed the line.
The U.S. Senate passed a resolution the other day urging President Obama to pardon boxing ex heavyweight champion of the worldJack Johnson. A little background info for you: Jack Johnson was a black heavyweight boxing champ during the early part of the 20th century. He was bold, brash, & really cocky. Like they say, though, it aint bragging if you can back it up & Jack Johnson could certainly back it up. He got so good that white people wanted him stopped, including Jack London (Call of the Wild), who wanted a "great white hope" to beat Johnson. Ex champion James Jeffries came out of retirement to fight Johnson. Johnson's dismantling of Jeffries led to celebrations in black communities & retribution from police & other whites, including beatings & lynchings. Eventually, what brought down Jack Johnson was the government, who tried & convicted him for bringing a white woman over state lines for immoral purposes. The immorality, you ask? He was with white women. Johnson fled the company, but came back some years later & served a year in jail. He died 20 years later in a car accident. His story was the basis for the movie the Great White Hope, starring James Earl Jones. I do hope that President Obama finally pardons Jack Johnson. It is justice long overdue for a man who paid the price for being too good.
According to the new NBC/WSJ poll, 37% of Americans believe that President Obama is dealing with too many issues. My main question is this: just what issues should he drop? Should he drop economic ones? Maybe he should forget about health care because we all know that’ll fix itself pretty soon. Maybe he can get those pesky foreign governments like Iran & North Korea to behave themselves so he won’t have to handle such little problems. People tend to have ADD when it comes to reality. We tend to forget what kind of trouble we were & still are in. We may not have that deep forboding feeling we all had in Febuary & March when it felt like the world was caving in but believe me, the problems haven’t gone away. We still have high unemployment. We have a health care system that’s going to bankrupt us. We have a regulatory system that needs serious fixing to prevent the banking crisis from theoretically happening again. The stimulus package money is just now beginning to work its way through the system. We have a swine flu pandemic, which isn’t affecting us as much right now but will once the weather starts turning colder. That’s a lot of plates to spin but you know as well as I do that if he starts dropping problems in favor of others, people will be screaming that he isn’t doing enough. These are tough times we’re in right now & there are many plates to spin. So far, the president seems to be doing a pretty good job of it.
It seems the drumbeats for President Obama to be more forceful with Iran are growing louder. Both Mitt Romney & John McCain have come out in favor of an aggressive stance concerning our relationship with the Iranian dictator. Even I on Sunday was practically screaming at the computer, wondering why Obama wasn’t saying much about the Iranian election. What I now realize is that much like Romney, McCain, & other Republicans, I would be wrong. The fact of the matter is that Obama can’t be too forceful at this moment for a few reasons. For starters, there is an extremely good chance that despite the election being rigged, the group that runs Iran now will be the same group that’s running it a year from now. Since they’re developing nuclear weapons, we’ll more than likely have to negotiate with them. Best not to get them more riled up than they already are at the moment. The second & more important reason is that if Obama says that he stands with the reformers, he’ll look like he’s meddling in Iranian politics & handing President Ahmadihijad a rather large propaganda tool to use against the reformers. The Iranian people may not like their leaders but they like America less. If we pick sides, at least at the moment, we will help to defeat the reform movement. As much as it pains me, it’s best to let the Iranians work it out for themselves right now & step in if things don’t go the way we want them to. It looks like so far, the tepid response is working. The supreme leader of Iran has switched positions & has now called for an investigation into the election. Also, we found out today that the State Department asked Twitter to postpone its maintenance shutdown so that the Iranian protesters could keep twittering so the US is helping the reformers, just behind the scenes. As far as why the Republicans want a tougher response to the crisis right now, it makes perfect sense. They’re not in power so talking tough has no political downside for them. It also makes Obama look weak in the eyes of Americans like me who would like a tougher response. I don’t envy the president right now.
Let me first state that I am an ardent supporter of President Obama. I signed the Draft Obama petition in 2006 & worked for his election through 2008. I’ve got posters, booklets, & other souvenirs from his election & inauguration. I download his speeches & appearances onto my computer so that my kids & grandkids will have something to go on other than stories & watered down versions of events, like we get when looking at 2 minute clips of Kennedy. Now that I’ve firmly established my Obama street cred, I’ve got beef with the guy. It’s got nothing to do with foreign policy, of which he’s doing a pretty good job so far. I’m not angry at him with domestic policy. I’m going with a wait & see attitude on the stimulus package, health care, & the like. My old Yes We Can attitude is fading over one major subject & that subject is transparency in government. When Obama ran for president, he said that the American people deserved to know what’s going on with their government. He started off strong by setting up websites where you could check where the money was going with regards to the stimulus package. However, there now comes word from MSNBC that the administration is blocking the news media from getting lists of visitors to the White Househttp://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31373407/. It’s an old policy that the Bush administration had in place but had gotten them into hot water (No more secret meeting to write energy policy. Remember that campaign rally slogan?). Obama’s reasoning is that privacy needs to be in place in case important people are interviewing for administration positions, etc. I find that to be a lame excuse at best. Once the position’s been filled, they should release the names, not block the public from knowing. The second policy that I have a problem with is giving major donors to the election campaign diplomatic positions. I know that it’s a policy that’s been in place since the dawn of politics but it’s a policy that has truly run its course. It smacks of cronyism, whether these people are qualified or not. Having given lots of money should completely take them out of the running for what are mainly cushy positions (with some major exceptions). Continuing both of these policies fly in the face of his campaign promises & need to come to a halt now. True transparency in government means not continuing with the secretive politics that have been played in the past but by letting the American people know what’s being done in their name.
The republicans, lead by Utah Rep. Bob Bishop, have unveiled a new energy plan to compete with President Obama's plan. The republicans have called for 100 more nuclear power plants, expanding renewable energy sources, & more mining of oil shale & uranium. What was missing from this plan was any major explanation as to how they were eventually going to pay for it. Also, they did not address concerns about protecting the environment, other than to create a fund to invest in renewable forms of energy. Quite frankly, this plan is a complete joke. I would've liked to have seen newer ideas & long term thinking from the republicans about curbing auto emissions & other environmental protections while, at the same time, trying to lessen our dependance on foreign oil with more responsible form of energy. Instead, they've treated us to more of the old republican gifts to the nuclear & oil lobbies. Oh, did I mention that Utah Rep. Bishop would like to see a lot of the new mining of uranium & oil shale to be in Utah? Shocker. Thankfully, this plan doesn't have much of a chance of passing, since the democrats control Congress. Still, I'm disappointed in the republicans. They had a golden opportunity to come up with something truly inventive & the best they can do is to dig for more fossil fuels & a lot more nuclear plants? Epic fail on their part.
